Pittsburgh Police responded to a report of a bomb in a Carnegie Mellon University parking lot yesterday and later deemed the area safe.
Forbes Avenue was closed for more than an hour yesterday afternoon after someone called 911 and allegedly saw a person putting a bomb in a white car.
Police later spotted the reported car and pulled it over in a parking lot on Carnegie Mellon's campus. After inspection the device was rendered safe, according to Pittsburgh Police Zone 4 spokesman Matthew White.
"Someone called in what they thought may have been a bomb," White said. "The car was inspected at CMU, which does a lot of work with the Defense Department, so it was a call we had to take seriously."
Forbes Avenue reopened around 2:30 p.m. yesterday after the Allegheny County bomb squad found a cylinder in the back of the car and deemed it not to be dangerous.
The driver was detained for questioning and an investigation is pending.
White admitted that the recent incident at Virginia Tech has people more anxious and that more precautions than usual are now needed.
"Virginia Tech has everyone on edge," he said. "This week is also the anniversary of the Columbine shootings and the bombing at Oklahoma City."

It is human nature to try to figure out why bad things happen. Long ago, we blamed natural disasters on the capriciousness of the gods. The flood was caused by Poseidon's wrath, the storm by Thor's fury. Gifts were given to the gods, sacrifices of fruit, of animals, even of people, in order to placate them and turn their anger into love for their human charges. Today most of us (Pat Robertson excepted) reject the notion that bad things happen because of an angry and vengeful God. And yet, when tragedy strikes, we still seek to find the pattern underlying the madness, our ultimate failing that led to our punishment by...well, we're never quite sure, but we're sure we're being punished.
After Cho Seung-hui opened fire on his classmates in Blacksburg, Va., it was only natural for us to ask why. The primary answer — that he was a deeply troubled, possibly schizophrenic and certainly psychotic man who was operating outside the bounds of normal society — is unsatisfying and seems to beg more questions than it answers. And so some writers have seized on an explanation that has a mythic history as rich and powerful as any blameworthy figure in human lore: It's the women's fault.
Not all women, of course, but specifically feminists. These horrid people have, we are told, upset the natural order. They have made women more like men, causing them to demand for themselves the same privileges and prerogatives that men alone have traditionally enjoyed. At the same time, they have demanded that men stop behaving like louts, thus feminizing them, making them more female, robbing them of their manly virtue. <em>National Review</em> columnist John Derbyshire started the drumbeat by arguing that all of the students should have been armed, the better to kill the shooter. But that wasn't his main point.
"Setting aside the ludicrous campus ban on licensed conceals," he wrote, "why didn't anyone rush the guy? It's not like this was Rambo, hosing the place down with automatic weapons. He had two handguns, for goodness' sake — one of them reportedly a .22."
Nathan Blake, a writer for the weblog Human Events caught Derbyshire's meaning and amplified it. "Something is clearly wrong with the men in our culture. Among the first rules of manliness are fighting bad guys and protecting others: in a word, courage. And not a one of the healthy young fellows in the classrooms seems to have done that."
Now, you may think that blaming students for not rushing a man with two semi-automatic handguns is, to put it nicely, insane. Especially since there were more than a few examples of bravery that day, from the resident adviser who gave his life trying to protect the first victim of the shooting to the students who held the door shut with their feet while Cho fired away above them. But of course, one should never let facts get in the way of a good session of blaming women. Besides, it wasn't just the men hand-wringing about those wimpy men; there were also women hand-wringing about those tough women.
Sarah Baxter, writing for the Sunday <em>Times of London</em>, fingered female sexual promiscuity as the reason that Cho Seng-hui went on his rampage, going so far as to quote long-time scold Camile Paglia in her argument.
"The pervasive hook-up culture at college," wrote Baxter, "where girls are prepared to sleep with boys they barely know or fancy, can be a source of seething resentment and alienation for those who are left out.
"'Young women now seem to want to behave like men and have sex without commitment. The signals they are giving are very confusing, and rage and humiliation build up in boys who are spurned again and again' [said Paglia]."
As the Kinks once said, it's a mixed-up, muddled-up, shook-up world. And that's when the gods get angry.
The scolds, of course, never really explain why it is that "young women behaving like men" is confusing and enraging — or at least, why young women behaving like men is worse than young men behaving like men. They don't have to bother. We all know that good girls don't, and cool boys do-the message is driven into us, all of us, from the moment we become aware of what sex might be.
If anything exacerbated the insanity of Cho Seung-hui, it was this message — the message that if he was worthy, he should be having sex, and lots of it. That if he was worthy, women would and should be lining up for him — but not the pure and chaste ones. Normal people learn, at some point, that this message doesn't make a lot of sense; that sex, while entertaining, is neither the best nor the most important measure of human worth and human happiness. We learn that whether you're having sex or not is a truly meaningless measure of your worth as a human being — whether you're a good girl who is, or a cool boy who isn't.
But Cho Seung-hui wasn't equipped to deal with this message, this drumbeat that he was a failure because he wasn't successful with women. And so he turned his rage to violence, first stalking women, then ultimately attacking them. That his rage reached a violent crescendo that included men as well was unsurprising, for it wasn't women he hated, or men — it was himself.
The killer internalized the messages of what men are "supposed" to be, and when he could not measure up in his mind to that standard, he did the only thing he could think to do — he became ultra-violent, violence being another acceptable proof of manliness. It wasn't a shortage of manliness that was the problem last Monday, it was a surfeit.
And so we come to find that the fault, if there was fault that we can assigned, lay not at the feet of the women who rejected a stalker, nor at feminists who want people to have rough equality, nor at men and women who faced a horrific massacre and did not all fight back against nigh-impossible odds. If there was a fault, it was that we as a society continue to try to tell people what they're supposed to be, rather than letting them determine that for themselves. That's not as satisfying as blaming women, nor as simple as blaming victims. But it's the truth, and we do ourselves and the dead no favor by pretending otherwise.

My wife and I went up to VT for a 4 day weekend, and to the German Club 115th anniversary. We toured campus and sat on the steps of Burruss Hall Saturday afternoon. We left Sunday afternoon, only to return to Houston - to find news of a much different place than we left. Absolutely awful.

(June 6) I will admit that I once uttered the statement, "There is no way any student should have to walk through that building again."
Norris Hall being "that building" - the site on campus at Virginia Tech where 31 of the 33 people killed on April 16 were shot.
But now, almost two months later, I just don't feel that way anymore.
When the university announced Tuesday in a press release that Norris will reopen on June 18, I was surprised. But after the initial shock wore off (about five minutes), I was not only OK with it, I realized that I am very glad.
A lot of fellow students agree.
"I think it's a good decision," said Caitlin Czeh, a 2005 graduate who has lived and worked in Blacksburg for the past two years. "It seemed like it just the right amount of time. A decision now will give students and professors who will be working in that building time to acclimate themselves and prepare themselves for being in there. And it gives those students who won't be in there some closure."
As announced, the building will open for office and laboratory use only. It once accounted for 5 percent of the classrooms on campus but will never be used for classes again.
I understand that not every student will be ready to return to that now-infamous building. But once again, the university is bending over backward to take care of students; other arrangements will be made for those not wanting to return there.
Personally, I feel very comfortable with this decision, especially since the engineering faculty themselves requested to move back in, according to the press release. Many of them had laboratory equipment and other materials necessary to do their research that would have been difficult to relocate or replace.
"As someone who was here [at Tech] on April 16, I don't know if I could go back into the building, especially so soon," said Jennie Tal, a 2007 graduate and a fellow BigLickU writer. "But on the other side, while this is a little soon, I think it is a good step in the direction of recovery."
Eventually, the empty classrooms will turn into more offices and labs. For now, many areas of the building have been repainted, and new lights have been installed.
Plans are under way for an official memorial somewhere else on campus.
Students and faculty will be able to enter the building using the Holden-Norris tunnel entrance. The building will be unlocked from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays, locked on weekends and accessible by key during off-hours.
The building will not be open to visitors.
I spent a good portion of today on campus at Tech and could not find one person in my travels who really opposed this decision. Like me, some were surprised, but then most talked of the healing that has already happened and needs to continue.
To me, closing Norris or knocking it down is just giving in to the evil that was perpetrated on this campus that day.
On June 14, four days before the scheduled reopening, the school will give tours of Norris in groups of 25 to the media. Dean Amy - our editor - and I will be on the first one at 10 a.m.
It will not be easy.
I'm 21 years old, a senior at Virginia Tech. A close friend lost her best friend in that building in April.
But I am honored to be able to report to you the state this place is now in.

And to all those engineering students and faculty out there who will return to Norris on the 18th, good for you.

As the country begins the process of healing in the aftermath of Monday morning's shootings at Virginia Tech, NYU students are showing support for the massacre's victims.
Several student government groups on campus have come together to launch a "White Ribbon Campaign" to show support for the Virginia Tech community and raise awareness about campus violence.
The campaign's organizers said they hope anyone and everyone gets involved.
"Our residence halls and our classrooms are our safe havens to think, to speak and just to be," Student Senators Council chair Mansi Patel and 2007 Senior Class Council President Bailey Woolfstead said in a statement. "It is unimaginable that any student face the terror which ensued in those safe spaces this morning."
Booths will be set up around campus throughout the week for students to pick up the ribbons.
The Bronfman Center for Jewish Student Life sent a three-person delegation to Virginia Tech to attend yesterday's on-campus memorial service and offer support to the school on behalf of the NYU community. Rabbi Yehuda Sarna and Gallatin seniors Nicole Vengrove and Lindsay Katona comprised the group from Bronfman.
Around the country, other schools are also showing their support through candlelight vigils and prayer services. Students at Columbia University gathered this morning for a multifaith service. Students at Virginia University, Virginia Tech's biggest rival, gathered last night for a candlelight vigil.
The shooting at Virginia Tech was the deadliest in American history. Thirty-three people were killed, including the gunman who committed suicide. The shooter was identified today as 23-year-old Cho Seung-Hui, a senior and English major at Virginia Tech.

Israelianul de origine focsaneana Zvi Ben Dov, directorul general al organizatiei A.M.I.R. care militeaza pentru infintareaunui muzeu al evreimii romane, i-a trimis zilele trecute primarului din Focsani, Decebal Bacinschi, in numele fostilor focsaneni emigrati in Israel, o scrisoare in care militeaza pentru recunoasterea numelui omului de stiinta Liviu Librescu in orasul in care acesta s-a format ca om. De altfel, acestia il numesc "focsaneanul" pe Liviu Librescu. Comunitatea de focsaneni din Israel a luat decizia de a-i scrie primarului Decebal Bacinschi la funeraliile "profesorului erou". "Prof. univ. dr. Liviu Librescu a trait si a invatat la scolile din Focsani si era atasat de locurile unde a copilarit. Presa romana, americana si israeliana a publicat pe larg istoria vietii sale si exceptionalele realizari in domeniul aeronauticii si nu numai. Fapta eroica a prof. univ. Liviu Librescu a fost elogiata de Presedintele Romaniei, Traian Basescu, ca si de Presedintele USA, George Bush. Noi sugeram ca, in memoria sa, o strada din Focsani sa primeasca numele profesorului focsanean Liviu Librescu", a detaliat Zvi Ben Dov, sustinut de israelienii de origine focsaneana. Primarul Focsaniului, Decebal Bacinschi, ne-a declarat ieri ca are toata deschiderea pentru acest proiect, declarindu-se impresionat de destinul omului de stiinta plecat din Focsani. "Am citit si eu in presa povestea acestui om extraordinar. Ar trebui conceput un proiect de hotarire de Consiliu Local in acest sens. Ar trebui sa facem si niste cercetari, sa vedem cam in ce zona a orasului a locuit profesorul Liviu Librescu, pentru ca viitoarea strada sa fie pe acolo", ne-a spus primarul Decebal Bacinschi.
Amintirile unui coleg
Chiar in timpul prigoanei antisemite, regretatul profesor Liviu Librescu s-a mutat la Focsani cu familia, unde locuiau bunicii sai din partea mamei si unde tatal sau, un avocat exclus din barou pe motive etnice, a avut domiciliul fortat inainte de a fi deportat inlagarele din Transnistria. Inginerul Matei Grisaru din orasul israelian Haifa, fostul sau coleg de scoala, isi aminteste ca in acea perioada portile liceului de stat din Focsani "s-au inchis ermetic"pentru tinerii evrei. "La Liceul Evreiesc infiintat in pripa cu sprijinul Comunitatii, in afara colegilor pe care ii cunosteam de la scoala primara, a aparut unul nou. Nu ne-a trebuit mult timp pentru a afla ca in cadrul persecutiilor la care au fost supusi evreii in acele timpuri a fost si izgonirea lor din orasele considerate de importanta strategica. In felul acesta, familia Librescu a ajuns in Focsani, orasul in care locuia unchiul lui Liviu, avocatul Ianconescu, nume cunoscut de marea majoritate a locuitorilor orasului. Liviu avea pe atunci 11 ani. Integrarea lui in rindurile celorlalti elevi s-a facut aproape instantaneu. De Liviu m-am apropiat din primele zile,poate chiar din primele ore in care el a aparut in clasa. Apropierea s-a reflectat nu numai in cadrul scolii, dar ea s-a concretizat si prin vizite reciproce, prin vizionarea unor filme la care ne era permis sa mergem si, oricit ar parea poate de curios pentru virsta copiilor care eram atunci, prin controverse pe diverse teme, inclusiv cele religioase. Discutiile, incercarile de a patrunde in miezul lucrurilorpentru aflarea adevarului sint poate amintirile care, in decursul multor ani, mi-au revenit in minte cu prioritate. Cind razboiul a luat sfirsit, drumurile noastre s-au despartit", isi aminteste fostul focsanean Matei Grisaru, despre care si regretatul Liviu Librescu spunea, intr-un e-mail, ca il leaga amintiri de neuitat din anii copilariei. Inginerul Matei Grisaru spune ca inca de atunci copilul Liviu Librescu dadea semne ca va ajunge un om mare. "Dintre toate materiile cel mai mult il interesau cele cu caracter tehnic, matematica avind prioritate aproape absoluta. Il invidiam uneori pentru modul direct in care prindea, din aer as zice, explicatiileprofesorului, dar niciodata nu ezita sa explice si celor care il solicitau ceva ce ei nu intelegeau. Pe Liviu l-am mai intilnit uneori la Bucuresti, nefiind deloc mirat atunci cind am aflat ca a devenit cadru universitar in domeniul tehnic", isi aminteste fostul sau coleg de scoala.
